Clueless In New York There was a strike at Airline
X some years ago. This particular airline hired replacement "pilots"
to help break the strike. Those that understood all the dynamics
of that particular situation would not have even considered putting their
families in the back of those flights. The weather was near landing
minimums (lousy) in New York and we were #1 for departure after the arrival
of Airline X. We heard the control tower issue a "go-around" to them.
A go-around is done for any condition that might adversely effect the landing,
i.e. the weather had unexpectedly deteriorated, aircraft (or an occasional
deer) on the runway, etc. The pilots then climb the aircraft and
go around and land a bit later depending on the circumstances. The
pilots on Airline X asked for the reason for the go-around. The controller
said "We show you over the end of the runway at 2000 ft." Typically
at that particular point you might be 50-100 ft over the runway.
Unless they planned to land vertically, which is not recommended, they
had to try it again. After a long pause on the frequency, they finally
responded with "Roger." My First Officer and I looked at each other
and rolled eyes because those "pilots" were "clueless in New York." |
